Theft investigation leads to fraud charges

On May 7, 2020 at 4:50 a.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a theft complaint from a Midland resident stating that his wallet had been stolen from his vehicle. Officers spoke with the victim who advised that his vehicle had been parked overnight on Johnson Street in the Town of Midland.

Along with his wallet being stolen, the victim noted that a credit card from the wallet had been used to buy items from retail outlets in the Midland area. Through investigation techniques and surveillance footage, the suspect was identified by the investigating officer.

On June 3, 2020 at 12:11 a.m. an OPP officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Port Severn Road, Tay Township which resulted in the officer locating and arresting the suspect who was in the stopped vehicle for the Johnson Street theft incident.

Charged is Philip Anthony Pickard, 39 years, of no fixed address with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

  • Theft under $5,000 from a motor vehicle
  • Use of credit card (two counts)
  • Fraud under $5000 (two counts)
  • Trespassing at night
  • Fail to comply with probation order (Three counts)

The accused was released from police custody on an undertaking to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland at a future date.
