Le Caron students shine on OFSAA nordic skiing stage

Penetanguishene school's junior team captures bronze medal at event held at Lakefield College after finishing first at GBSAA championships

École Secondaire Le Caron students shone bright at the recent OFSAA nordic skiing meet.

Held at Lakefield College, the Ontario high school junior championships saw Le Caron students Rhys Armstrong, Leo Chicoine, Liam Desroches and Farland Lamont capture the bronze medal in the Junior Boys team competition.

A week earlier, the quartet won gold medals in the team and sprint relay categories during the GBSSA (Georgian Bay Secondary School Association) championships held at at the Hardwood Ski and Bike.

At OFSAA, meanwhile, the Le Caron team finished strongly in the individual five-kilometre open category.

Chicoine placed fifth followed by Lamont capturing 10th place and Armstrong coming in 12th. In the high school category, Desroches placed 72nd.

These finishes were enough to propel the team to win team bronze at OFSAA.

The open category is for athletes who are also coached outside of high school, whereas the high school category is for athletes who are coached exclusively at school, which in Le Caron’s case involves coach and teacher Catherine Hartman.

On the final day of the competition, the team competed in the exciting and fast 900-metre by four relay against Ontario’s best high school teams. Le Caron finished 4th with a photo finish used to determine the outcome.
