BARRIE CURLING CLUB

The Barrie Curling Club is kicking off the 2023-2024 in a big way as they host the Stu Sells Tankard and Stu Sells Junior Tankard starting Thursday, Oct. 5. The events will bring a total of 66 teams in four competition categories to the curling facility on Essa Road. Teams are coming from all over North America and the world.
“It’s an exciting time to be a curling fan in Barrie and have a chance to see elite-level talent in action right here in our house,” said Melanie Hughes, Barrie Curling Club Manager.
Visiting rinks include previous Brier (Canadian Men’s Championship) competitors such as Matthew Manuel (Nova Scotia), John Epping (Ontario), among others, and multi-time Champion Glenn Howard.
On the women’s side, Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Women’s Championship) finalist Krista McCarville and team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, lead a strong field into competition.
International visitors include the 2018 Olympic Championship team skipped by John Shuster (USA), plus teams from Japan, China, Switzerland, Scotland and South Korea. Athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Saskatchewan will also be competing.
On top of the action on the curling ice, and in light of it being Thanksgiving weekend, teams and spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to the club for donation to the Barrie Food Bank.
“We know there are individuals and families in our community struggling to put a good meal on the table, so we hope to top up the Food Bank coffers with the help of these curlers,” said Hughes.
Curling action kicks off Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m, and continues through to the finals on Monday, Oct. 9 at 5 pm. There is no admission fee to attend, and parking is available on-site at 175 Essa Rd. Spectators are welcome.
