A Port McNicoll man faces numerous charges after a suspected impaired driver was reported leaving a fast-food restaurant in north-end Barrie last night.

Shortly before 9 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 21, Barrie police responded to a Bayfield Street eatery. As officers were arriving on scene, police say the suspect vehicle was seen exiting a parking lot, south of Cundles Road West, and travelling south on Bayfield.

"An attempt was made to safely stop the fleeing motor vehicle, but the driver was able to swerve through traffic and enter the southbound lanes of Highway 400," police stated in a news release Tuesday. "In the interest of public safety and concerned by (the) manner in which the vehicle was being operated, police stopped following the vehicle."

As the investigation continued, police say officers learned the vehicle had been stolen and that the suspect driver was at a Newmarket home.

York Regional Police was notified and its officers attended the address, where the suspect was arrested.

A 27-year-old Port McNicoll man was returned to Barrie and has been charged with driving a motor vehicle with no plates, flight from a peace officer, operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, driving while under suspension, failure to comply with a release order, and theft of a motor vehicle.

The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear later today, by video, for a bail hearing at the Barrie courthouse.
