Le père Viateur Laurin, est décédé à l’Hôpital général de la Baie Géorgienne le 25 avril, à l’âge de 82 ans. Il était le fils d’Hormidas Laurin et Imelda Marion. Il laisse dans le deuil sa soeur, Soeur Céline et ses frères Placide et Guy; pré-décédé par Blanche, Benoît et Gérard. Lui survivent 15 neveux et nièces, ainsi que leurs familles. Viateur parlait souvent des ses amis Mado, Frank et Paul.
Jeune garçon, Viateur s’est distingué par son succès académique: il fut lauréat au Concours provincial de français au primaire et au secondaire. Il poursuit ses études à l’École normale, devient enseignant. Plus tard il joutera des bacheliers en arts et en théologie. L’appel de la prêtrise l’amène au Séminaire St-Augustin de Toronto. Son ordination en juin 1967 est une occasion de fierté pour ses parents dévots, et pour toute la communauté.
Le père Viateur a laissé sa marque dans les paroisses du Diocèse de Toronto: Sacré-Coeur de Toronto; Ste-Anne de Penetanguishene; St-Patrick de Perkinsfield; Ste-Famille de Mississauga; L’Assomption-de-la-Sainte-Vierge, Oshawa. Retiré en 2008, il continue son oeuvre pastoral en servant la Communauté catholique de la Région de Barrie de 2012 à 2016.
Par son humilité, sa compassion, et son humour, il cherchait non seulement à faire avancer son troupeau dans la foi, mais aussi à bien connaître ses brebis! Ses paroissiens s’en souviennent avec affection.
Tout au long de sa vie, Viateur démontre un intérêt dans la langue française de chez nous: ses écrits sur les mots, les expressions et les récits du “bon vieux temps” font partie de notre héritage. Il contribuait régulièrement au journal “Le Goût de vivre”. Il était bien connu comme raconteur, et n’a jamais perdu son penchant pour enseigner!
Merci au gens d’hôpital pour le soin et la compassion reçu durant son séjour. Père Viateur a suggéré que les dons en sa mémoire soient adressés à Hospice Huronia.
Les funérailles auront lieux samedi le 6 de mai à l’Eglise Sainte-Croix de Lafontaine. Son corps sera exposé à l’église de 9:00 à 10:00, avant la messe de 10:30.
Father Viateur passed away peacefully at the Georgian Bay General Hospital in his 83rd year. He was a son of Hormidas and Imelda Laurin (née Marion). He is survived by his sister Soeur Céline; his brothers Placide and Guy; predeceased by Blanche, Benoît and Gérard. He also leaves fifteen nieces and nephews; longtime friends Mado, Frank and Paul.
As a young man, Viateur distinguished himself as a scholar: he was winner of the Concours provincial de français in both primary and secondary levels. Following high school he obtained his credentials as schoolteacher, and taught for a couple of years. He later added a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Theology to his academic resumé. His call to the priesthood brought Viateur to St. Augustine Seminary of Toronto. His ordination in June, 1967 was a proud moment for his parents and for the community.
Following his ordination in June 1967, he ministered to various parishes in the Diocese of Toronto: Sacred Heart, Toronto; St. Ann’s, Penetanguishene; St. Patrick’s, Perkinsfield; Holy Family, Mississauga; Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, Oshawa. After his retirement in 2008, he served the needs of the Catholic francophone community of Barrie from 2012 to 2016.
Through his innate humility, compassion and humour, Father Viateur sought not only to support his flock on their faith journey, but also to get to know every sheep! He is fondly remembered by his parishioners.
Viateur had a lifelong interest in the French language, especially the words, expressions and tales of his native region: his writings on the subject make up part of his legacy. He was a contributor to a local paper “Le Goût de Vivre”, for many years. He was also much sought after as a storyteller. He never lost his penchant for teaching…
Thanks to the staff at GBGH for their care and compassion during his extended stay. Father Viateur requested that memorial donations be made to Hospice Huronia.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 6 at St. Croix Church, Lafontaine. Viewing will be from 9 to 10 am at the church prior to 10:30 mass.
