With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Edward Houghton, days before his 92nd birthday.

Born in Chaplin, Saskatchewan to John Percival and Sarah (Bannman), John moved to Cookstown, Ontario as a young lad, the only boy with four sisters. As a boy, he attended elementary and high school and worked for many farmers in the area. During his young life, he married his first wife Louisa (Nevils) and they had four children. After rising to Assistant Manager in the local Bank branch, John took a job with the Ontario Cattle Breeders Association where he found visiting with the local farmers more to his liking.

Marriage to his second wife Geraldine (Fowler) took John to the Midland/Penetanguishene area where they shared a home on the water, love for boating and spent many winter months on Florida's sunny coast. John spent his retirement years pursuing his extremely creative talents woodworking, landscaping /gardening and collecting wooden and glass figurines.

John was an active member of AA for almost 60 years, a record he was very proud of. He spent many of those years as a mentor, friend and inspiration within the AA program. With an innate patience and kindness, John had a natural calming effect on others. He was a natural fit for the years he spent as a volunteer with hospice. Always quick with a smile, a kind word and often a light joke, John was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

John is predeceased by his wife Geraldine, parents; sisters Verna, Elsie and Alice; and son Kenneth. John is survived and will be dearly missed by best friend and companion Bernadette; children John Jr (Petch); Lynn; Ann (Douglas); step daughters Christie and Shelley; favourite sister Patricia (Jagos-MacIssac) and her family Kim, Paul and Christine; aa well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There will be an intimate burial ceremony for John in the weeks to come. Please pay respects online at LeClair Funeral Home in Midland. In lieu of flowers, we will be accepting donations in Johns name to Hospice Huronia.
