Old Fort Road, south of Hwy 12 near Port McNicoll, is anticipated to reopen in mid-February following many months of construction delays while replacing the Old Fort Overhead Bridge.

MidlandToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via our website. Please include your daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in response to an article on the Old Fort Road bridge reopening, published Jan. 13.

I note from your article that the new bridge will not accommodate trains passing underneath. So much for the eventual return of rail to Midland once we wise up and think about transportation costs sensibly.

Why a bridge at all? A large culvert installed for the Tay Shore trail would have allowed the gully to simply be filled in without a bridge at all. Once the old bridge was removed the filling would have taken days, not over a year and a half at a fraction of the cost.
