MidlandToday welcomes letters to the editor at [email protected] or via the website. Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in reponse to an article about a Penetanguishene couple being forced to remove folk art from their property, published April 23.

We escaped from the GTA almost two years ago and finally realized our dream of moving to the Midland-Penetang area.

To say we love it would be an understatement.

Typically we walk our puppy every night and frequently walk by Dragonfly Unlimited.

We love looking at all the items and marvel at how creative the Duguays are. We feel that their display adds charm to the area, and if we were their neighbours we would be delighted to have them next to us.

We realize there must be rules for society to function but at some point in time common sense must prevail.

This really is unfair and there has to be exceptions to some rules that make no sense.

This comes at a time when the council is considering a pilot project to allow ATVs on the town’s streets. What are they thinking?

We spent several summers in Fenelon Falls and would ride our bikes almost every day on the trail from there to Haliburton, and were constantly bathed in dust, dirt and debris from dozens of ATVers flying by us.

And how about the abandoned home on the corner of Water and Scott, purchased by Chinese nationals several years ago and left empty to rot  and decay?

Finally, when the grass and weeds were three feet high and we called the city, they sent a crew to cut it. Why not pick on them instead of the Duguays?

One of the things we love about the area is the overall peace and calm compared to the insanity of the GTA.

We fail to see any benefits to the local residents of having noisy and dirty ATVs on our streets.

We apologize for deviating from the true purpose of this email.

We strongly urge the local government to reconsider their position against the Duguays!

Sincerely,

The Bailys
