Tuesday was just another day for many of us.

For countless others across the province, it was an anniversary of a great tragedy. It is the sixth month since a young OPP officer was gunned down after stopping to assist a vehicle stuck in a ditch.

The funeral service and subsequent social media stories and posts told the story of an exceptional young man, Greg Pierzchala, who was at the beginning of a career to serve and protect the public. Much has been said, written and promised to change the bail system, which led to a twice-released person, out on bail, with a warrant to apprehend, which was not executed, until that fateful day when he wantonly, randomly and wilfully took the life of this young officer.

There has been talk and some action by our provincial government to attempt to ensure this does not happen again. I fear it will happen because of the culture we live in and the lack of respect for any authority: teachers, government, police officers, to name a few.

Today, though, is a reminder of Greg Pierzchala, Badge 16082. He was more than a number. He was a son, a brother, a friend and a colleague. And his parents have grieved every day, as have his family and friends. And for us in the communities that are served and protected by police officers, let’s remember, and let’s thank those who serve.

Thank you for each officer that serves. Greg, you will not be forgotten.
