At a Special Meeting of Council held March 27, 2024, Council appointed Mr. Jasmin (Jaz) Patel as its newest member of Council. The appointment is effective immediately as Councillor Patel took the declaration of office at the meeting. He will act in his official capacity as Councillor for the balance of the current Council term until November 2026.
“I’m pleased to welcome Jaz Patel to our team. Councillor Patel brings a fresh perspective, a wealth of business knowledge, and a passion to serve the residents of Midland. Council is confident in his ability to help shape our community over the next couple of years,” said Mayor Bill Gordon. “There were many outstanding candidates in this appointment process, and I want to thank them all for their participation and for their dedication to the Town.”
The seat of Councillor was declared vacant on February 14, 2024, when Councillor Beth Prost was appointed as Deputy Mayor after the passing of Deputy Mayor Jack Contin in the fall of 2023. Based on legislation, Council was required to fill the vacant seat within 60 days of the declaration and Council authorized the Clerk to request applications from interested persons by a call for nominations.
Seven candidates took part in the appointment process with each submitting a nomination package complete with the required documents, signatures, and a qualifying Midland address. The list of qualified candidates can be found on the Council Vacancy webpage at midland.ca/vacancy. Each of the qualified candidates had the opportunity to address Council and answer questions at yesterday’s Special Meeting.
