Owners Charlene and Rye Trejo are feeling the love from their customers and fellow businesses in this Georgian Bay town.

“We had a booth for two years at the Southern Georgian Bay Farmer’s Market, prior to opening our doors. We still do the market every summer and love being out and about with our customers,” explained Rye. “At the market, we initially mostly sold our artisanal bread, but now with the bakery and Charlene resigning from her flight attendant career to focus more on her baking skills fulltime, we have added to our line of products.”

Boulangers Midland City Bakers offers artisanal breads, pies, sweets, butter tarts, and donuts, as well as other specialty baked items.

“Because we make everything from scratch, and source all the ingredients ourselves, every day can be different here,” explained Rye. “Sometimes we will have butter tarts, another day a different kind of cookie, every day our donuts are different. It’s what makes us stand out. It’s fresh, homemade, made from scratch using all the knowledge we have learned over a lifetime of baking.”

Charlene hails from Gatineau, Quebec, originally and her grandparents were bakers, while Rye was born in Mexico City and eventually found his way to Toronto.

“Because of our heritage and our history, we bring different types of baked goods to Midland. Our pies might be spiced a little differently, we offer empanadas from my heritage, and at Christmas time, our traditional Quebec tourtieres are very popular,” explained Rye. “Charlene makes them from old family recipes that she tweaks to bring her own special touches learned from her world travels.”

The couple has enjoyed being members of their community with their Midland bakery. “We have partnered with many different businesses and places in the area and have really liked that,” said Rye.

“The local school sends us donut designs, and Charlene does her best to bring them to life on our donuts. She is an artist, so she is very good at that! We have also partnered with Mink Insurance to give their customers free goods, and of course we have supplied fresh baked breads and goods to several local restaurants in the past.”

Charlene also finds an outlet for her artistic side in the uniquely decorated cupcakes and cakes that are available during the holiday season. “We are an artisanal, small batch bakery, so we are happy to work with our customers and do special orders, make that special something for them, whether it’s at Christmas time or any time of year,” explained Rye. “Customers can just call or email and we will make them something beautiful and of course, delicious.”

Boulangers Midland City Bakers is located at 741 Yonge St, unit 4, in Midland.
