VIDEO: Shot fired during attempted break-in in north Barrie

'Honestly, I fear for my family's safety. My kids and I are traumatized. All my kids saw the incident ... Nobody deserves any of this,' says resident

City police say a shot was fired through a door during at attempted break-in at a north-end Barrie residence early Monday morning.

“A window to the rear apartment at that location was broken. There was also a shot discharged through the door,” said Peter Leon, communications co-ordinator with Barrie police. “Fortunately, no one was injured.”

Aevic Geris, who lives there with her husband Chris and their three boys, ages three, five and seven, told BarrieToday it was a fearful situation.

“Honestly, I fear for my family's safety. My kids and I are traumatized,” she said through Facebook Messenger. “All my kids saw the incident ... Nobody deserves any of this.”

Police were called to a residence in the area of Cundles Road East and Springdale Drive on Jan. 8 at 2:20 a.m.

Leon said video surveillance obtained by police shows four individuals in the back yard.

“They all appear to be young males and one was in possession of a what appears to be a shotgun — the other appears to be in possession of a firearm, being a pistol,” he said.

Leon said the males did not get into the residence and fled the scene.

Police are looking for a mid-sized grey SUV as well.

This is not the first time Barrie police have been called to the building.

“This address actually was involved in an incident that had been reported to us back in November,” Leon said, “and we’re not sure why these occurrences are taking place in that specific neighbourhood and involving that specific home."

He said it’s the same building, but the November incident was in an upstairs unit. No arrests have been made in that case.

Police are not happy the incident is on social media.

“People have gone and posted those pictures, which is troublesome in the sense that we are conducting an investigation that is very active,” Leon said. “I can appreciate they’re trying to provide assistance, but that’s not something that we would normally recommend people to do, is utilize social media to try to solve crimes. That’s what the police are for.

“We would appreciate the opportunity to do what we do best and that’s investigate these types of occurrences,” he added.

The presence of firearms heightens the danger level.

“Obviously, we’re dealing with at least two individuals who are armed with firearms that would be considered armed and dangerous,” Leon said. “Certainly if somebody came upon these individuals or recognized or determined who they were, we wouldn’t want anybody to get unnecessarily involved or hurt as a result of their action.”

Police are asking anyone in the area with video from 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 8 to call Barrie police at 705-725-7025.
