Two-vehicle crash in Penetanguishene results in impaired charges

A collision with another vehicle then a utility pole has resulted in a driver facing impaired charges and the closure of Fuller Avenue in Penetanguishene for a period of time last evening.

On Dec. 6 at around 7 p.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended the intersection of Robert Street East and Fuller Avenue in Penetanguishene after receiving calls reporting a collision. One of the two involved vehicles had left the roadway and struck a utility pole, causing electrical wires to fall to the ground. Penetanguishene Fire Department, as well as Simcoe County Paramedics attended to assist in securing the area and treating an injured driver of one of the vehicles.

While speaking with the injured driver, officers noted the smell of alcohol on their breath. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to a local hospital. As well, the driver was placed under arrest and breath samples were obtained.

As a result of this investigation, Leszek Wojtal, 60, of Midland, faces the following charges contrary to the Criminal Code:

  • Operation while Impaired
  • Operation while over 80 mg

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 21. When charged with impaired driving, the driver's licence of the accused is suspended for 90 days and the vehicle they were operating is impounded for seven days.
