Marine officers from the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol checking vessels and operators for equipment and impairment focusing on Giants Tomb and Beckwith Island areas along with patrols of Six Mile Lake, Gloucester Pool and the Trent system over the July 4-21 time period.

Officers issued four tickets for liquor violations and 11 tickets for mariners not having sufficient life-jackets on their vessel. Twenty-four other mariners were ticketed for Canada Shipping Act violations. During the officers’ patrols, 272 vessels and their operators were checked for equipment and sobriety during their 149 hours of patrol. Seventy operators were warned for various other boating related offences.

Marine activity of note

Members of the OPP Central Region SAVE Team teamed up with the Southern Georgian Bay Marine Unit July 8-9 to provide a greater coverage of the vast marine area and the large number of vessels in these areas. Operators likely noticed an increased police presence in known vessel mooring areas.

Officers remind boaters that although pets need to be taken for a walk periodically while they stay aboard, they need to go to a place that does not violate private property owners’ rights. The Trespass to Property Act does protect private property owners and officers will be enforcing complaints made to them such as in Good Harbour.
