The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined no criminal offences were committed by police in relation to an incident in Tay Township in which a man was killed in June.

The 55-year-old man contacted police on June 10, saying he was suicidal and had a firearm in his vehicle at a rest stop near the Hog Bay Trestle monument off Highway 12.

“Officers, including those trained in crisis negotiations, conversed with the man over several hours, and officers unsuccessfully attempted to use a conducted energy weapon and Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield to incapacitate him. The man shot himself and was taken to hospital where he died,” the SIU stated in a news release.
