Two impaired drivers were nabbed by city police yesterday, both in downtown Barrie, in separate cases.
In the first case, Barrie police responded to the Collier Street Parkade at 2:09 a.m on Feb. 19, after security there observed a number of people, believed to be impaired, making their way to vehicles that were parked inside the structure.
“Just after 2:30 a.m., a vehicle exited the parkade, and police followed it westbound onto Collier Street where a traffic stop was conducted,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon said in a news release this morning.
A 21-year-old Midland man was arrested and charged for impaired driving. He was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where it was confirmed he was driving in excess of the legal limit.
He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on March 6.
In the second incident, police say a driver was found to be impaired last night after being involved in a collision at Wellington and Donald streets.
The accused failed to stop for a stop sign on Donald Street shortly after 9 p.m. and struck a vehicle which was travelling eastbound on Wellington Street West.
As a result, a 42-year-old Collingwood man was transported to police headquarters where a breathalyzer technician determined that, at the time of the collision, his blood-alcohol concentration was in excess of two and a half times the legal limit, police said.
The accused is now facing charges that include impaired driving, careless driving, failure to surrender an insurance card, and possession of more than one driver’s licence.
He is scheduled to appear in court on March 18.
In both cases, the drivers had their driver’s licences suspended for 90 days, and their vehicles impounded for seven days.
