Barrie police have charged a Midland man with impaired offences after his poor driving caught the eye of several motorists before entering the city limits.

Shortly 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, local officers stopped the suspected impaired driver, who was initially spotted travelling southbound on Highway 11, south of Orillia.

"Reports of a motor vehicle being operated erratically, at excessive speeds and cutting off other motorists were being received as the suspected impaired driver exited Highway 400 and proceeded northbound on Bayfield Street in the city of Barrie," police said in a news release Wednesday.

As the driver continued to navigate his way around the northeast end of the city, police say additional details were being received by the communications centre.

The vehicle was seen entering a commercial plaza lot on Cundles Road West, where it continued to strike a number of curbs as the driver approached a nearby coffee shop, according to police.

When officers arrived on scene, police say it was "obvious" that the driver was impaired.

A 47-year-old Midland man was arrested and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters for further investigation. He was formally charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, operation while impaired (over .80 milligerams), dangerous driving, and an offence under the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 19, 2023.

The man's vehicle will be impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.
