TINY TOWNSHIP - Uniform officers assigned to the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment Marine Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged eight vessel operators for failing to have lifejackets for all aboard during their Aug. 10-17, 2021 area patrols.

Officers are surprised and disappointed in the number of operators they are finding negligent in having the number one piece of lifesaving equipment aboard their vessels this late in the marine season.

The marine unit checked 92 vessels and operators for signs of impairment and ensuring proper safety equipment was on board during their 65 hours of patrol. In total, 28 operators were educated on a variety of minor violations under the Canada Shipping Act (CSA) and officers also responded to sixteen water based calls for service.

Three marine collisions were investigated, including an aircraft landing on Six Mile Lake striking a canoe, none of which thankfully resulted in any injuries.

Focused patrols were conducted along the Tiny Township shoreline, Giants Tomb, Six Mile Lake, Trent Severn System and Gloucester Pool areas along with educational visits to area marina's giving the boating public an opportunity to learn of safe boating practises

Reminder

Wearing your Lifejacket while on the water will definitely increase your chances of survival if you should go overboard, having sufficient lifejackets for everyone aboard is the Law! (see submitted graphics)

If you see a possible impaired operator "Make the Call" and dial 911 and help prevent a summer time tragedy.
