No injuries reported after apartment fire in downtown Midland

Cause of late Tuesday night fire still under investigation; Ontario Fire Marshal’s office contacted

Four Midland residents were displaced after an apartment fire in downtown Midland late Tuesday evening.

“There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters,” Midland Fire Chief Richard Renaud told MidlandToday.

Renaud said his team received several 911 calls at about 10:30 p.m. regarding a structure fire at a residential over commercial building on King Street.

“On arrival, crews found a medium-size, two-storey building with a working fire in the second-floor apartment area,” Renaud said. “All occupants self-evacuated prior to the fire department's arrival.”

Renaud said the fire was contained to the upper floor.

“There is significant damage to the entire second floor along with water damage to the business on the first floor,” he said. “The building department will be contacted to assess the structural stability of the building.”

Renaud said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and that the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted.

The fire also featured mutual assistance from neighbouring departments with Penetanguishene sending two apparati to assist and Tay firefighters covering the Midland fire station while Midland crews were at the incident.

County of Simcoe Paramedics were also at the scene as were Southern Georgian Bay OPP officers, who assisted fire crews by closing King and First streets between Elizabeth St. and Hugel Ave.

And while the road closure was eventually lifted after about two hours, Borsa Lane remains closed as fire services continue their on-scene work.
