On Jan. 1, 2021, at 3:20 p.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a car that was being driven dangerously, including onto the sidewalk and nearly striking a pedestrian, in the area of King Street and Elizabeth Street in the Town of Midland.
A description of the vehicle was provided and it was located entering a parking lot a short time later. Police spoke with the driver and suspected that she was under the influence of alcohol.
The driver provided a breath sample into a roadside screening device and registered a Fail. During a search of the vehicle, a crossbow was located and seized. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the detachment to provide further breath samples.
As a result of this investigation, Skye Nutbean, 33 years of Midland faces the following charges contrary to the Criminal Code:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Dangerous operation of a vehicle
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Occupant of a vehicle knowing there was a prohibited or restricted weapon
The driver's licenses of the accused parties have been suspended for 90 days and their vehicles were towed and impounded for seven days. Both were released from police custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland in Jan. 2021.
Just after midnight on Jan. 1, 2021, a member of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Provincial Police was responding to a call in Tiny Township when he observed an SUV which was stuck in the snow at Concession 16 West and Tiny Beaches Road North.
It was evident that the vehicle had been travelling southbound when it missed a curve and left the roadway. The officer approached while the driver attempted to free the vehicle with the help of bystanders.
Upon speaking with the driver, the officer noted the smell of alcohol on her breath and other signs of impairment. The female was placed under arrest and was transported to the detachment to provide breath samples.
As a result of this investigation, Iwona Grajko, 36 years of Tiny Township faces the following charges contrary to the Criminal Code:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
The driver also faces a charge of Driving Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
The Ontario Provincial Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our trails, roadways and waterways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.
