A young Orillia cyclist was airlifted to a Toronto hospital after suffering "life-altering" injuries on Sunday afternoon.

The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was struck by a vehicle while crossing busy West Ridge Boulevard at Vanessa Street, say police.

The youth was transported to Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital before being transferred by Air Ornge to a Toronto hospital.

West Ridge Boulevard was closed for several hours as members of the OPP's Central Region traffic incident management and enforcement and collision reconstructionists assisted with the investigation.

"The crash is still under investigation," said Orillia OPP Const. Brett Boniface, noting it's not yet known if charges will be laid.

He said the cyclist suffered "significant" injuries despite wearing a helmet when the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Police encourage all drivers to be mindful of cyclists on the roadways, and further encourage all cyclists to follow the rules of the road and always wear a helmet.
