Impaired driving collision helps get cocaine and fentanyl off the streets

About $8,000 worth of illicit drugs plus break-in tools and stolen property seized by police from vehicle involved in Highway 400 crash last night

A collision last night on Highway 400 through Barrie ended up getting thousands of dollars of drugs off the streets and saw two people charged with several drug and theft-related offences.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two-vehicle collision on Thursday around 11:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Bayfield Street. Police did lay impaired charges against one of the drivers.

Aurora OPP media relations officer PC Nicola Morris said that as a result of the investigation, officers seized several illegal items from that vehicle.

“Approximately $8,000 worth of illicit drugs, $1,500 in break-in tools and $1,000 in stolen property were seized,” said Morris. “Two individuals were charged as a result.”

A 49-year-old male from Toronto was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, operation of a vehicle while impaired, possession of break-in instruments, possession of Schedule 1 substances (cocaine, fentanyl) and possession of property obtained by crime.

A 33-year-old woman from Thornhill was charged with possession of break-in instruments, possession of Schedule 1 substances, possession of property obtained by crime and disobeying a court order.

Both people charged were taken to a local hospital for precaution but no serious injuries were reported. Both accused were, according to police, in the same vehicle.
