Driver airlifted to Toronto after 'serious' ATV crash in Severn

An ATV driver was airlifted to a Toronto hospital after suffering "serious injuries" in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night.

OPP are investigating the "serious, single all-terrain vehicle collision" that occurred at about 9:30 p.m. July 23.

Police say the driver was ejected after rolling the ATV near Taylor Line and Upper Big Chute Road in Severn Township. Police say the man, local to the area, is in his late 20s.

The lone rider was wearing a helmet, police say. The driver was transported to a local hospital before being flown, via Ornge, to Toronto.

OPP technical collision investigators and reconstructionists are assisting with the investigation, according to an OPP media release.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, events leading up to it or have any information in relation to this investigation, to call Orillia OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.crimestopperssdm.com.

When riding an off-road vehicle on or off-road, drivers and passengers must wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chinstrap. When riding, please follow the following safety tips:

  • Always ride according to the trail, road and weather conditions
  • Use extreme caution when turning, crossing, climbing and descending hills
  • Drive sober - it's illegal to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs
  • Ride in designated areas only
  • Respect the environment and keep noise levels low
