A 20-year-old man was taken to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital this morning after suffering a medical emergency on Lake Couchiching.
Seven firefighters from the Orillia Fire Department were called to the scene around 11:30 a.m.
Deputy Chief Chris Ferry says the man was cooking in his ice hut when he suffered steam burns to his upper body.
"They were cooking on a portable stove," Ferry explained.
Ferry says this was the first time in his firefighting career that he had encountered such a call from an ice hut.
"This is something that happens in a residence from time to time," he noted.
Ferry says the victim was transported by ambulance, noting he's unsure as to the extent of the man's injuries.
"He was conscious when I was there," Ferry said. "He walked to the ambulance."
Ferry says there is a lesson that can be learned from the incident.
"When you are cooking with a camp-style stove, be cautious just like you would be in your residence," he said. "Be cautious of steam and any other hazards that come with cooking."
