23-Dec-1945 - 10-Dec-2021

Died peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep at home on December 10. He will be greatly missed by his mother Priscilla Wackerlin, his wife Elizabeth O’Connor, his son Dave (Sarah) Wackerlin, his daughters Jessica (Ryan) Erola and Elise (Jon) Dennis, and his grandchildren Campbell, Eden, Rebecca, Noelle and Ethan. Born in Chicago in 1945, Richard celebrated many academic successes as a boy and young man, being promoted ahead grades before earning his graduate degree in Rehabilitative Counselling from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1969.

He moved to Canada directly following where he continued to pursue his passion for promoting peace, social justice and the well-being of the marginalized. A dedicated psychometrist who combined a deep intellect with profound compassion, Richard served for much of his career at the Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre, where he supported countless Ontarians experiencing mental distress and promoted mental wellness. Richard also explored political activism and supported his colleagues as a local leader in the OPSEU union. Richard had a passion for the arts, taking a several year secondment from his psychology career to co-found and operate an artisan business for which he created and sold stained glass artwork. During retirement Richard continued to promote social causes in his community and was especially proud of his work as a board member of the Rosewood Shelter, as well as active member of the Seniors Council, Peaceworks, and Friends of the Midland Library.

He is remembered by friends as, ‘brilliant, funny (oh those puns), and an astute observer of people and politics’. He was a caring, loving son, husband, father and grandfather who is loved dearly and whose memory will be cherished with intense fondness. A memorial service will be held in Spring/Summer 2022 to honour his life. Donations can be made to Doctors Without Borders or any charity you choose.
