24-Dec-1925 - 12-Jul-2023

Dorothy Mae Thompson passed away peacefully with family by her side on Wednesday, July 12th, at the age of 97.
We were so blessed to have shared her life’s journey.

Born December 24th, 1925 to parents Bill and Rose Gavin, Dorothy was the eldest, much loved sister to her 3 siblings, Barbara (John) Seaton, Patricia (Dieter) Frey and Bill (Sharon) Gavin

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Richard Thompson and their son Gary (Benthe).
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Vicki, granddaughter Carol (Greg) and great grandchild Ori, all whom she loved dearly and was exceptionally proud of. Over the years others became family, Debbie and Lynda. And some, like Mary, became new best friends.

When Dorothy and Dick moved to Midland in 1964, a transfer by the Woolworths company, Dorothy decided it was the last move for the family and they put down roots. They soon became very active in the Calvary Baptist Church, remaining lifelong members and becoming part of the group that raised money and literally the walls of the present building. Dorothy took a secretarial position with a local furniture company, Furnco, where she worked for many years in the office. She was involved with the application in 1987 to incorporate and create Askennonia, becoming its first editor and the creator of the monthly newsletter. She was a driver for both the Cancer Society and Meals on Wheels. She was nominated for Senior of the Year, in the year 2000.

Her interests were varied. Reading was a lifelong passion, quilting, sewing, rug hooking and gardening also kept her busy. Later in life, in cahoots with her neighbour, Mrs. Jones, she even did a little gambling. And pies! Baking pies…sour cherry pies! The best ever!
Crossword puzzles gave way to jigsaw puzzles, Wordle and Waffle, books gave way to, 2 iPads and a Kobo reader. Her little dog Bella, companion over the last 11 years gave her great joy and was a constant source of entertainment. Her “
granny flat” was a beloved space, attached to Vicki’s house, designed especially for her and it was her happy place, right to the end.

While death is a sad place for those left behind, for Dorothy, she was going heavenward to her eternal home. Let her faith give us joy and peace. We love you Dorothy!

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3:00 in First Presbyterian Church, Penetanguishene.
