23-Jul-1930 - 10-Mar-2021

Born on July 23, 1930, Margaret (Rita) Patricia Smith passed away peacefully on March 10, 2021 at Hospice Huronia, Penetanguishene.  Predeceased by her beloved husband John (Jack).  Cherished mother of Anne Marie (Raymond), John (Karin) and Allan (Laura).  Much loved Nana of Peter, Zachary, Lisa Marie, Sierra and Nicole.  Loving sister of Morag (Glasgow) and James (Ottawa).  “Big Sister” to Bette McGoldrick.  Predeceased by her brothers Robert, Andrew and Eric.Rita arrived in Midland with her husband and family in 1965 and soon made her mark in the community she loved.  She first worked as a nursery teacher at Tinkerbell Nursery, and then was employed as a teacher and school secretary at Sacred Heart School for over 25 years.  She was active in the Legion of Mary and CWL of St Margaret’s Church, and St Theresa’s High School Auxiliary.  She served on the board of Midland Public Library for twenty years, chairing every committee and took particular pride in the renovation of the library.  She received the Canada 125 Medal in recognition of her significant contribution to her fellow citizens and community.Photos of her group of Scottish Country Dancers appeared frequently in the local press. She volunteered at the Naval Establishments as a docent and helped organize period dances there, often having to take a male role.  She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary for many years.  Rita had a rich and fulfilling retirement, travelling with Jack, reading voraciously, singing. She loved a party.  Her many friends will remember the 50th and 60th anniversary parties thrown by Rita and Jack – with lots of  lively Scottish dances. But most of all, loving and caring for her family was at her core.  She delighted in her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed.  A celebration of Rita’s life will be held later when we can safely gather.  If desired, donations may be made to Hospice Huronia at hospicehuronia.ca
