After a courageous and unwavering battle with pancreatic cancer, Ted Salisbury passed away peacefully on April 10, 2024 at Hospice Huronia Tomkins House, Penetanguishene, Ontario with his loving wife of 35 ½ years, Victoria (Tory) by his side. Ted will be deeply missed by his immediate and extended family members. He was compassionate, gentle, loving and always an optimist.
Ted was born in Midland, Ontario. He pursued his education at Ryerson University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning. He had a keen interest for municipal governance and was the Director of Planning, Orangeville; Director of Planning Services, Oakville; Senior Advisor, Municipal Consulting at TKMC/Blackstone; Commissioner of Community Development and then Chief Administrative Officer, Brantford, Ontario. He retired in 2015.
Ted started sailing at a young age and his passion for boating spanned his entire life. He had a fondness for YMCA Camp Kitchikewana where he spent many summers in his youth. His first sailboat was a 23’ Grampian, the same boat he would ultimately take Tory on her first sail. Ted had so much joy in selecting and outfitting the multiple sailboats and power boats that were such a large part of their lives. Together, they spent their boating years on the waters of Georgian Bay, Lake Ontario, Sarasota Bay (Florida) and multiple cruising adventures in the Caribbean, the BVI’s and beyond. They travelled extensively and Ted was a master at planning out each exciting destination. The final boat for Ted in 2023 was a tri-toon, called “Toon Therapy” that enabled him to safely navigate the waters of Georgian Bay to relax and fish. His love of boating and extensive knowledge of the industry gave him the best years after retirement for that “fun” job – working at Bay Port Marina, Midland and becoming a Yacht Broker for Bayshore Yachts. He was in his realm.
Ted and Tory bought their “happy place” in Longboat Key, Florida to escape winter. By retiring early, Ted was able to get several years down south to enjoy the warmth, boating, fishing, cycling, afternoons on the beach, good friends, good food and amazing sunsets.
As per Ted’s wishes, he was cremated. There will be a service and celebration of his life on at 1 o’clock on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at St. Paul’s United Church, Midland, Ontario. This provides an opportunity for memories to be shared and hearts to find solace together in remembrance. Donations may be made to Hospice Huronia Agency at the Huronia Community Foundation or Cat Depot, Sarasota Florida, in memory of his love for Daisy, beloved cat of 19 years.
