Born January 1st, 1929,  died December 13, 2023 just shy of her 95th birthday.

With gratitude for the life of our mother and grandmother, we share news of her passing on December 13, 2023 at Georgian Bay General Hospital.Joyce was predeceased by her husband Norman Ernest Ellis, (2016)  and their son Douglas Kurt Ellis (2004).

She leaves behind to honour her life and mourn her passing, her daughters Linda Gidora ( Nick) and Donna Macfarlane ( William), and her grandchildren Heidi Buss, Benjamin Wray ( Colleen), Nicky Wray ( Karine), Emma Macfarlane, Brontë Macfarlane (Thomas), and great grandchildren Katelyn Buss, Mitchel Buss, Keely McGlinn, Braden Wray, Jett Wray and Mila Wray. Joyce and Norm made a happy home for their kids and grandchildren in Downsview.  After Norm’s retirement they made their way to Midland where family roots drew them. They enjoyed an active and joyful retirement, travelling widely, cross-country skiing, and enjoying new friends and making great memories with their kids and grandchildren.

Joyce was the consummate homemaker, cooking, baking, canning, knitting, and gardening, all while keeping on top of politics and current events. She was a passionate bridge player as well. In the last few years Joyce made her home at King Place in Midland, and appreciated the kind care she received from all of the staff, including her beloved Penny Frandsen. Joyce was a woman of faith who taught us by example to live by our word, and to accept with grace the things we cannot change. We will be forever grateful to her for her love, support and deep kindness. We are grateful to GBGH for the compassionate care she received in her final days, as well as to Dr. Helt for going above and beyond, and to Karen Ptolemy-Stan, St. Paul’s United Church Minister, for her support of Mum and us. It’s not easy being the last of a generation, but Joyce managed the challenges with grace and good humour.

A service of remembrance will be held at St. Paul’s United Church in Midland at 11 am on December 23rd. If you wish to mark Joyce’s passing, a donation to St. Paul’s United Church or to CNIB or any charity of your choice would be appreciated.
