Canadian goalkeeper Devon Kerr signs one-year deal with the Houston Dash

HOUSTON — Canadian goalkeeper Devon Kerr is back with the Houston Dash

The 25-year-old from Barrie, Ont., spent the last two NWSL seasons as a backup with the Washington Spirit, who won the league title in 2021. The Dash said she has signed a one-year contract.

Kerr started her pro career in Houston, joining the Dash as a non-rostered invitee during the 2019 pre-season and was signed to the roster that April.

“It was always my dream to play soccer at the professional level,” Kerr said in a statement. “Having the opportunity to re-sign with the club in the city I started this professional journey is another dream come true. It is incredibly special to me.”

Kerr played collegiate soccer at Ohio State University where she made 63 appearances and had 19 career shutouts.

She signed with Washington ahead of the 2020 regular season.

Kerr joins fellow Canadians Allysha Chapman, Sophie Schmidt and Nichelle Prince on the Dash roster, which includes goalkeepers Jane Campbell and Ella Dederick.

Born in the Toronto area, Kerr grew up in Barrie and Markham, Ont. While her Barrie-based parents are both Canadian, she and her mother also hold American citizenship through her mother’s father, a U.S. veteran.

Kerr played for Canada in the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. But opportunities dried up after that and when U.S. Soccer reached out again, Kerr went on to spend time with the U.S. U-19, U-20 and U-23 teams, with her last appearance in 2018.

Canada coach Bev Priestman called Kerr into camp in early 2022 ahead of the Arnold Clark Cup.
