BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Chris Perkins, the only Canadian archer competing at the 2022 World Games, will leave Alabama with a bronze medal in the compound target competition.
On Friday Perkins started strong with a second-place qualification in a field of 25 archers. His second half score (358) was the highest in the group and it totalled with his first half score to 713.
The only tie break between him and first-place finisher Mike Schloesseer of the Netherlands was the number of centre Xs. This score earned him a bye to the quarterfinals, where he squared off against American James Lutz, winning 148-146. In his second match of the day, he shot next to Lukasz Przybylski of Poland and again walked away with the win, 148-145.
On Saturday, Perkins’ was slotted against Miguel Becerra of Mexico in one of two semifinals. It was a tight match, with Becerra pulling ahead by only two points in the second end. While Perkins and Becerra were even keel for the rest of the match, because of that small lead, Becerra won the semifinal and advanced to the gold-medal match.
Perkins then quickly turned around and squared off against Abhishek Verma from India for the bronze. After a tie in the first end, Perkins consistently held the lead, only shooting two 9s in the entire match. His strong shooting carried him to a bronze medal in the men’s compound target competition, an amazing result for the Canadian archer.
The World Games are a multi-sport event for sports and/or disciplines not contested in the Olympics.
