Midland wants to come up with official names for the walkways and alleys that dot its downtown core.
And to do that, the town is looking for residents' help to suggest names for the east and west walkways that converge onto King Street.
“The walkways are the connectors for those parking in the municipal lots to access the businesses on King Street,” Mayor Stewart Strathearn said.
“In their current state they aren’t very welcoming, nor do they provide a great first impression of our amazing downtown.”
One such walkway is located between TD Canada Trust and Bell while across the street the west-side walkway is between Arcade & Jory Guardian Pharmacy and Creative Cut.
The town plans to beautify these spaces through the Love Your Laneways project.
“The Love Your Laneways project will transform them into safe, welcoming and visually appealing environments,” Strathearn said. “We’re asking residents to suggest names for these walkways to complement these improvements.”
Residents are invited to submit their suggestions for names from now until February 11 along with a brief description of why they think this should be the selected name.
There is no limit to how many names one individual can suggest.
The list of suggested names will be narrowed down to a top 10 list and the community will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite two names the week of February 21-25. Town staff will then tabulate the votes and present a report to council in March with the final naming decisions being made by council members.
