The Sultans of Swing will present their Christmas Caravan Dec. 17 at the Midland Cultural Centre.

While Mark Knopler won't be performing, a Canadian group that takes its name from Dire Strait's earliest hit is ready to wow the audience at the Midland Cultural Centre December 17.

Canada's Sultans of String are set to perform later this month as winter crests, the mercury falls and everyone from your taxi driver to the music supervisor at the mall starts running timeless hits like Jingle Bells and Silent Night

But for their Christmas Caravan show and album (which hit Billboard’s World Music Charts and the New York Times Hits List), Canada’s string wizards Sultans of String celebrate the holiday spirit with an adventurous musical trip around the world, featuring exuberant originals, world-music inspired classics, and seasonal favourites to warm your heart on a cold winter’s night.

Joining the Christmas Caravan this year is shimmering guest vocalist Rebecca Campbell.

From fiery fiddle tunes to a Caribbean sleigh ride, this surprising and delightful holiday fiesta heats up when Sultans of String bring their signature sound to well known gems such as Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, a Turkish twist on Greensleeves, Silent Night, as well as a Django-jazz inspired Django Christmas, and a Rumba-Flamenca fuelled Jingle Bells.

Christmas Caravan show is also a special awareness-raising bash for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As fundraising partners with UNHCR, the band has raised over $10,000 from their community awareness efforts and UNHCR’s ‘tip boxes’.

“Helping refugees is a cause we care about deeply because more than 67 million refugees worldwide are in desperate need of our support," said Chris McKhool, a member of the Sultans of String.

"They have every right to live a safe and dignified life as much as we do,” says McKhool, a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient. “By supporting this show and partnership with the UNHCR, you are providing life-saving assistance to refugees all over the world.”

Presented by Brookside Music Association, tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.
