SGB OPP adding plate recognition, camera systems to vehicles

'This will support officers in maintaining a safer community and input data at a faster rate than human input,' detachment says

Southern Georgian Bay OPP patrol vehicles are now being installed with automated licence plate recognition and in-car camera systems.

Specialized technicians will be completing their last install at detachment this Friday and activating the new video systems.

“The OPP have invested in technology that will notify the officers operating patrol vehicles the information related to vehicle licence plates that are not valid, are wanted or missing persons, stolen vehicles, stolen and unattached plates, suspended/prohibited drivers and vehicles associated with AMBER Alerts,” the detachment notes in a release.

“This will support officers in maintaining a safer community and input data at a faster rate than human input.”

Furthermore, patrol vehicles will be equipped with in-car cameras.

“The OPP strives to continue to display transparency, professionalism, accountability, as well as investigative excellence to our communities,” the force says, pointing out officers patrolling local roadways continue to see drivers operating vehicles that do not have valid registered plates.

Police remind drivers vehicle owners are not required to buy a validation sticker, but licence plates must be renewed to be valid annually or biannually.
