Seven new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka region since Friday

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported seven new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (July 19), which is the first since Friday. 

A Severn man over 79 years old died on July 16 after contracting COVID-19. This is the third COVID-related death reported from Severn. 

There are 30 active cases in the region. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,334 cases of COVID-19 with 11,627 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

There are four people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses, which includes one new hospitalization since Friday.

The health unit has confirmed 4,968 variant cases in the region so far, with 15 of those cases still active. 

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • 3,997 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha)
  • 166 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern
  • 34 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern
  • 98 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, up by two since Friday.
  • An additional 673 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).

About 48 per cent of the region's total population is fully vaccinated, and another 20 per cent has one dose of a COVID vaccine. The remaining 33 per cent is unvaccinated, which includes children under 12 who are ineligible for a vaccine at this time.

Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):

  • Barrie (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Innisfil (3): Two youth under 18 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Bradford (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is outbreak-related. 
  • Severn (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Essa (1): One person under 18 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on July 19). 

It should be noted total cases minus recoveries, deaths, and hospitalizations does not equal active cases. Some confirmed cases were lost to follow-up and therefore are not listed as recovered.
