Ontario reports 84 COVID-19 deaths today

Another 84 COVID-19 deaths were reported in Ontario since yesterday. 

According to the province’s public health report today, 36 of those deaths were residents of long-term care homes. 

It is the largest number of deaths reported in a single day since the start of the outbreak on Jan. 15. 

The province is also reporting 370 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 500 more recoveries. 

There were 14,555 tests completed on Saturday to produce the results included in today’s report. There are 6,265 cases awaiting results. 

There are 984 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 225 people in intensive care units and 175 people on ventilators. 

Since January 15, Ontario has confirmed 17,923 cases of the coronavirus, and 12,505 people have since recovered. There have been 1,300 deaths attributed to the virus, and 626 of the people who have died with COVID-19 in Ontario have been residents or patients at long-term care facilities. 

The Ministry of Long-Term Care reports there are 175 outbreaks at long-term care facilities in the province, accounting for 2,751 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in residents and 1,619 in staff. The ministry reports there have been 972 deaths of long-term care residents as a result of COVID-19. 

Public Health Ontario, however, reports there are 212 outbreaks, 2,564 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in long-term care residents, 1,274 cases in staff, and 626 deaths of residents. Public health numbers tend to lag behind those reported by the Ministry. 

There are now 2,761 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in health care workers in the province. Whether or not they contracted the virus at work is not reported. 

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit still lists 283 total cases on its website, including 159 recoveries, seven patients hospitalized, and 20 deaths. 

However, Ontario's daily epidemiological report states there are 310 cases reported in Simcoe Muskoka. The regional health unit does not update the COVID-19 cases listed on its website on the weekends. The health unit is scheduled to provide an update this afternoon. 

The case rate (including lab-confirmed cases only) for Simcoe Muskoka region is 51.7 cases per 100,000 population. The provincial average is 120.6 cases per 100,000 population.
