Ontario reports 513 new COVID cases Thursday

Today's update includes zero deaths and 256 recoveries

Public Health Ontario reported 513 new COVID cases and zero deaths in today's update (Aug. 12). 

This is the highest number of cases reported in a day for Ontario since June 13. 

The report includes 256 new recoveries. 

There have been 11 new hospitalizations and four admissions to intensive care units since yesterday's report.

The August 12 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 2,868 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 2,611 yesterday.
  • 116 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • There are 83 COVID-positive people in intensive care units, another 30 patients in the ICU because of COVID no longer test positive. 
  • 53 COVID-positive are on ventilators, and another 23 patients ventilated because of COVID no longer test positive.
  • The province reported 22,896 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.1 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 9,372 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.7 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 105 are from Toronto, 64 cases are from Peel, 25 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, six are from Grey-Bruce, and 70 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 68 individuals under 12 years old, 35 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 257 people between 20 and 39 years old, 101 people between 40 and 59 years old, 48 people between 60 and 79 years old, and four people over 79 years old.

Vaccination status

The vaccination breakdown for new cases is as follows: 

  • New cases* include 360 unvaccinated, 56 partially vaccinated, and 88 fully vaccinated. 
  • Hospitalized (non-ICU) cases include 44 unvaccinated, seven partially vaccinated, and 10 fully vaccinated.
  • ICU cases include 44 unvaccinated, five partially vaccinated, and two fully vaccinated. 
  • 63.6 per cent of the total population of Ontario has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

*Vaccination status numbers may not match the daily COVID case reports because of missing health card information. The province has stated its vaccination status reporting should improve over time. 

Today's vaccination rate update includes:

  • 49,167 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday.
  • 20,047,911 doses of vaccine have been administered.
  • In total, 9,456,663 people have been fully vaccinated.

Total case counts and rates

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 553,962 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 541,682 recoveries and 9,412 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,759.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 14.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 52.8 per cent from last week.

Simcoe-Muskoka

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 15 new COVID cases.

There are currently 69 active cases in the region. 

There is one person from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,453 cases of COVID-19 with 12,129 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

Last week, the case incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka was 7.8 cases per 100,000 people over seven days, which is up by 95 per cent compared to the week of July 27 to Aug. 2.
