Ontario confirms 977 new COVID cases today

The province reported nine more deaths, including four long-term care home residents

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 977 new cases of COVID-19 today as well as 864 recoveries and nine deaths.

The nine new deaths reported today include three people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and six people over the age of 80. Four of the people who died were residents at long-term care homes. 

There have been 32 people hospitalized since yesterday's report and eight COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units. 

Of the 977 cases reported today, 279 are from Toronto, 238 are from Peel, 130 are from Ottawa, and 113 are from York Region. 

The province reported more than 37,000 tests have been processed since yesterday's update.

There are currently 7,981 active, lab-confirmed cases in the province.

Since January, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 76,707 cases of COVID-19, and reported 65,581 recoveries and 3,145 deaths. 

The average incidence rate in the province is 516 cases per 100,000 people.

In the local region, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,356 cases of COVID-19, with 1,277 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,141 cases listed as recovered. Five people are currently hospitalized. The health unit has recorded 50 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 242 cases per 100,000 people.
