GEORGIAN BAY CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE

The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre (GBCSC) in Penetanguishene has launched Art for Hope Online. This online art auction, which will be open for bidding until Feb. 12, is raising funds for centre’s programs and services supporting people facing cancer in North Simcoe and Southern Georgian Bay. The workup for auction is a print multiple by Group of Seven member A.J. Casson, Winter Evening.
Paul Eichhorn, manager of fundraising and outreach at GBCSC, explained many people expressed an interest in having a chance to help the centre and potentially get some great art for their home after the successful Art for Hope fundraiser last spring. He added having an online art auction opens it up to a wider audience and means the GBCSC can offer artworks such as Casson piece throughout the year (beyond a live event fundraiser). The GBCSC received several artworks from two donors in late 2021 to use for fundraising purposes.
“More and more people are now participating in online auctions,” noted Eichhorn. “It’s an easy way to get involved in a fundraiser, and you can take part just by clicking on your computer keyboard, tablet, or mobile phone.”
A.J. Casson joined the famed Group of Seven in 1926. He’s best known for his unique works depicting the varied Ontario landscape. He was making art well into his final years, passing away in 1992 at age 94. Casson works have received record bids at auction houses in recent years. His painting Gathering Storm was sold at auction in 2016 for over $1.5 million (a new record for a Casson work).
