Most pet owners think they can only fill pet medicine prescriptions at their vet’s office. This is not the case. Pet owners can also get them filled at pet pharmacies, often for up to 30 per cent less. Why aren’t pet owners informed of these options? Good question.

“What pet owners don’t know certainly won’t hurt them or their pets, but it can definitely end up being very costly. In some cases, it will add up to hundreds of dollars a year, “says Dr. Howard Covant, a practising veterinarian for over 35 years and a pet owner himself. “To date, there isn’t anyone within the pet industry dedicated to providing pet owners with independent information on issues that directly impact them and their pets. It’s a crying shame.”

While pet owners are the epicentre of the pet world, they are the only ones who don’t have an organization that represents their interests. Until now. Dr. Covant and a small group of concerned individuals have launched the Ontario Pet Owners Network, a membership organization devoted solely to representing and serving the needs of pet owners across the province.

The network is on a mission: To be the voice of Ontario’s pet owners, to provide them with the information they need, the services they want and the means they require to be able connect with each other.

Priority one is to raise the financing required to operationalize the mission. To that end, a fundraising and membership drive is currently underway. This is an opportunity for Ontarians to support the cause by purchasing an advanced membership to the network for as little as $30.

The initial campaign will be running for the next two months. There is also a website at https://opon.ca/ that provides information about the network for all interested pet owners. Pet lovers are encouraged to learn more on the website and to lend their support to OPON at https://igg.me/at/OPON.

“This is just the beginning,” Dr. Covant explains. “We’re building working relationships with individuals who want to get behind financing the organization. We’re planning to build alliances with members of the pet industry who share our love for pets and want to help pet owners know more, do more and save more. “

Millions of Ontarians love their pets. It’s time to get behind them, to represent them, to help them and their pets. OPON invites all pet lovers to spread the word about OPON and to join the movement to, improve the lives of our beloved pets and their owners.
