An event organized by local radio personality Meg Whitton has resulted in a significant donation to support environmental initiatives in this region.

Not only did it keep used clothing out of our landfills; the Severn Sound Environmental Association (SSEA) has received a cheque for $1,640 thanks to the efforts of Whitton and the local community.

“I organized it because I felt paralyzed watching our weather change drastically and not really knowing what to do,” said Whitton, who hosts the morning show on Bounce Radio.

The result: a clothing resale of second-hand women’s items on June 17 at the Perkinsfield Arena with proceeds to the Severn Sound Environmental Association.

“A second-hand clothing sale does three things — promotes buying second-hand, allows us to notice what we’re not using, and raises funds for SSEA,” said Whitton, who hopes to tweak the event and offer something similar the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“A huge thank you to Meg Whitton and to the local businesses, the donors and the community for their amazing support,” said SSEA executive director Julie Cayley. “The funding will allow SSEA to enhance environmental work designed to protect local water quality, manage invasive species and take local action to address climate change. Every action we take locally makes a difference.”

The Severn Sound Environmental Association is a joint municipal service board that implements environmental initiatives on behalf of eight member municipalities in the Severn Sound region.
