Midland Mayor Bill Gordon hopes to get some help as he looks towards creating a mayor’s charity golf tourney this fall.
Similar to an offering in Tiny Township, proceeds from the event at Brooklea Golf and Country Club would go towards helping local community groups.
“With the success of similar events in neighbouring Tay, Tiny and other municipalities, Midland council’s goal is to raise funds for our community grants program, which donates funds to local charitable and not-for-profit initiatives serving Midland residents each year,” Gordon said.
“The community grants fund currently comes from tax dollars and council’s goal during the 2024 budget discussions was to move away from tax funding while still keeping the program viable for 2025 and beyond.”
Gordon, who hopes to make the tournament an annual event, said he’s looking for a small group of individuals with specific skills, including those who have experience planning a one-day golf tournament (maximum 144 players), finding sponsorships and silent auction prizes and helping with promotion and communications.
“For both real and perceived conflicts of interest, there are tasks that neither I nor other councillors can do, such as selling sponsorships or soliciting donations and prizes,” he added.
“Aside from those tasks, we are ready to pitch-in and get this tournament off the ground and need the help of some of the amazing talent we know exists within the Midland community.”
Tiny's annual mayor's charity golf tournament has proven to be a huge fundraising success over the years. With the 14th edition this June at the Midland Golf and Country Club, organizers hope to raise $64,000, bringing overall grand total to $500,000
