GEORGIAN BAY CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE

One local cancer survivor is close to $3,000 richer after winning the most recent jackpot of the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre’s (GBCSC) 50/50 raffle draw.
Launched in early 2023, it has raised thousands to support free programs and services offered by the GBCSC for people impacted by cancer across north Simcoe and South Georgian Bay.
“One hundred per cent of the net proceeds from these lotteries goes towards the direct costs of providing programs and services to individuals and families fighting cancer here at home,” says Eric Walter, executive director, GBCSC. “... We couldn’t meet this demand without initiatives like this.”
He adds the additional funds have helped the GBCSC address the increased demand for support. The centre saw 89 new members join in 2023 bringing the total served now to over 330 members. In 2023, the GBCSC facilitated 90 counselling sessions, over 100 hours of group support, and 53 monthly program sessions.
For the most recent winner, the cause hit particularly close to home.
“It’s very close to my heart. I could have used this support when I had cancer. It’s so important to have this here,” said Caroline Whiteside, speaking emotionally about her battle with cancer almost a decade ago. “I wanted to do something, and buying a ticket was something small I (could) do.”
Tickets for the GBCSC 50/50 fundraiser are available online only at www.rafflebox.ca/raffle/gbcsc. Ticket packages range from $10 to $100, with proceeds supporting cancer support programs offered in both Penetanguishene and Collingwood. The next draw takes place on Friday, June 14 and tickets are now on sale.
