Local animal shelter looking for green thumbs with hearts of gold

OSPCA Midland Animal Centre's Gardeners’ Gathering starts Sunday with proceeds helping animals in need

Celebrating the rebirth of the season, a major fundraiser starting this weekend benefits the OSPCA’s Midland & District Animal Centre.

The annual Gardeners’ Gathering fundraising is celebrating its 15th season this year with a week of activities beginning Sunday to get winter-weary gardeners excited about the planting season ahead.

While the event will be virtual again this year, there will be a number of webinars designed to tap into everyone’s inner green thumb.

“The organization as a whole is still holding off on hosting in person events until the third quarter this year out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19,” explained Midland Animal Centre community development coordinator Robin Elliott.

“I’m excited to be preparing for our in-person Walk at the Wye Marsh in September though.”

As for the Gardeners' Gathering, Elliott said it’s a fun community event that should appeal to both gardening enthusiasts and animal lovers.

“The Gardeners’ Gathering is a chance to get excited about the season ahead, learn new  gardening tips and tricks and – most importantly – help change the lives of animals in our  community,” she added.

For those interested in learning how to create a cut flower garden to enjoy beautiful floral arrangements all season long, Cady McLaughlin of Georgian Roots Farms will show you how during a virtual webinar Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10.

There are also some great items available as part of the virtual silent auction, including gardening items, animal related products, indulgent treats to pamper yourself and everything in between.

The auction opens Sunday at noon with bidding ending at 4 p.m. on May 8. Click here when the auction opens and get bidding to help animals in need.

To wrap things up, local musician Dylan Lock is showing his support by performing a live virtual classic rock concert on Facebook next Friday from 6 to 7 p.m.

Funds raised during the event go to the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre to help animals in need and make community support services possible.
