The skies opened up on Aug. 12, not once but twice in many areas of our region, yet nothing could stop the determined garden tour visitors as they drove from garden to garden, viewing beautiful gardens, learning about new plants, picking up landscaping ideas, sharing stories and knowing they were supporting an important cause.

The Georgian Bay Garden Tour (GBGT) committee presented Hospice Huronia with a cheque for $10,000.

Despite rainy weather that week and rain forecast for the day of the tour, 278 tickets were sold and a great day was enjoyed.

“We couldn’t do this without the dedication and commitment of the 12 participating gardeners who opened up their property for public viewing. They reported really enjoying the cheerful visitors, sharing what they had done with their property and why, the trials and tribulations of gardening in their particular area,” says Kay Hawkins, GBGT chairperson and also a participating gardener this year. “We are thankful for the support of our local business sponsors and the tremendous support from the garden visitors. It was a fun day and really helps out our local hospice, Hospice Huronia.”

Funds raised will provide families and individuals with compassionate hospice palliative care in-home and at Tomkins House as well as supporting programs for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Next year’s tour is scheduled for Aug. 10, 2024 and the committee is actively seeking new gardens, right now. If you’re interested in being a host garden, email Kay here. Check out their website or follow them on Facebook for information on next year’s tour.
