A dog perished in a fire at a Midland home earlier today.

Firefighters responded to the call at the Sixth Street home shortly before noon after receiving a call from a neighbour across the street who noticed smoke billowing from the eaves, Midland Fire Chief Paul Ryan said.

“When the crews arrived, they made entry into the building and came across some heavy fire conditions and heavy smoke,” Ryan said.

“They were able to extinguish the fire. Everybody was away from the home at the time. Unfortunately, a family pet didn't make it out.”

Ryan said the fire is not deemed suspicious and he didn’t have a damage estimate.

“That’s up to the insurance company,” he said, adding there’s more smoke damage than actual fire damage.

“The windows were knocked out by us trying to ventilate the fire.”
