The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre (GBCSC) in Penetanguishene is once again holding its annual Paint the Town Pink campaign throughout October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign is well-known in the local area for its pink, plumed, and bedazzled pumpkins.

All funds raised over the month go back to programs and services for those impacted by cancer in North Simcoe and the surrounding area.

This year 250 pumpkins (supplied by R & P Desroches Farm) are available for sale at $20 each while supplies last (typically, pumpkins are all gone by mid-October). Pumpkins can be purchased at the GBCSC or online and picked up at the GBCSC beginning after Oct. 2.

The number of locations where pumpkins can be purchased has expanded for 2023. Along with Farm2Door (159 Balm Beach Rd. E., Midland), you can also find pumpkins at For Sale on Georgian Bay (255 King St., Midland), and Shirley’s Boutique (758 Yonge St., Midland), and at the Midland Farmers’ Market on Oct. 8.

Dedicated volunteers (including many GBCSC members) got together to wash, paint, and decorate pumpkins. Due to the expanded programming at the GBCSC this fall, some of the pumpkin painting and decorating was taken on by others in the community. Several were painted and decorated by the staff and volunteers at For Sale on Georgian Bay and staff at Deluxe. Plus, students in two classes at École secondaire Le Caron in Penetanguishene contributed by decorating five dozen painted pumpkins.

“It was amazing to have so many throughout our community contribute in this way,” says Paul Eichhorn, Manager, Fundraising & Stewardship, GBCSC. “We couldn’t pull off a successful campaign each year without our dedicated team of volunteers.”

Along with the pumpkins sales, several Community Partners are helping out in October. Some are donating sales proceeds (or a portion) of specific products or funds raised from a special event for the GBCSC. The Pebble Tree and DeFerrari Home are selling special edition, Breast Cancer Awareness scented candles. Other contributing local businesses include The Mouse Trap, Lily’s Italian Eatery, Newton Street Art Barn, Tiny Gems, Boulangers Midland City Bakers, Royal Tea on King, The Pulse Nutrition, and Georgian Bakery. The items available include jewellery, cupcakes, cookies, pink cocktails, and a pink prosecco cheese. Go to the link below for a full list of local participating businesses.
