Dear Editor,

Your letter with respect to train travel demands a response.

This both a national and a provincial issue. The truth is that Via Rail is an orphan. It lacks its own tracks and its equipment is from a time gone by.

On the other hand, Ontario has been paying a terribly high price in order to provide transport by truck, transport which should be provided by rail this eliminating the high cost of building and maintaining highways as well as vastly reducing delay times and accidents.

One wonders how China is able to build rail lines which accommodate thousands of passengers efficiently and on time in new and up-to-date equipment using electricity and not diesel fuel. In one shot, they are lowering the use of fossil fuels while Canada maintains fossil ideas. Our idea of progress involves setting up yet another committee and issuing vague promises.

My thoughts on Ontario’s actions are best left for another time.
