Parking metres like this one are now found throughout Midland's downtown core.

Dear Editor

I was so distressed when I went downtown to find pay parking stations installed everywhere.

On speaking with others, we agreed they are not the easiest to operate and pushing those yellow buttons needs strong fingers. As a resident with arthritis in her hands, I fully object to our council agreeing to ruin our downtown by installing these offensive machines and making a trip downtown no longer a pleasure for shopping or walking.

The excuse from council is that the money gained will help to pay the town’s bills. I think the town councillors should be able to figure out another way to pad the town’s coffers. Did these learned officials fail to see that the our downtown businesses will suffer when their customers get tired of pushing buttons (in all kinds of weather) to park their car near their store or business.

I think the residents of Midland should look into which councillors agreed to installing these offensive pay stations and remember their names during the next vote.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Coles
