INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Last call for The Beer Store?

This week on the podcast: Change is on tap for the Ford government, which appears ready to finally fulfill a five-year-old campaign promise to allow beer sales at your local corner store

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: Big change on tap.

For five years, Premier Doug Ford has championed the idea of selling beer at your local corner store. That reality appears closer than ever, with the province poised to drastically alter the way beer, wine and spirits are distributed across Ontario.

Does that mean last call for The Beer Store, a decades-old monopoly that dates back to the end of prohibition? Or do the hundreds of outlets have a place in the Ford government's master plan?

And if The Beer Store does disappear, who will take back all our empties?

We pose those questions — and many more — to Dan Malleck, a Brock University health sciences professor who is an internationally recognized expert in drug and alcohol regulation.

Pour yourself some suds and enjoy the show (responsibly, of course).

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.
